Abstract
The article addresses the critical issue of working on listening as a type of speech activity in Russian language lessons in year nine. The study aims to identify and analyse the difficulties ninth-year school students experience when listening. Moreover, drawing on the obtained data, another goal is to justify the methodology for enhancing students’ listening skills in Russian language lessons as part of their preparation for the Basic State Exam (OGE). Listening is understood as a type of speech activity consisting of reception, semantic processing (comprehension, compression, and so on), and spoken language retention in memory which requires an appropriate response. On these grounds, we identified the stages of listening comprehension instruction and showed the continuity between primary and lower secondary school. In addition, the article focuses on the final stage of basic general education analysing the challenges identified by schoolchildren when preparing for the OGE in Russian and caused by their insufficiently developed listening skills. The article analyses scholarly works in the field of psycholinguistics and their methodological interpretation, generalises scientific and methodological knowledge as well as our personal educational experience and data from empirical research. These methods enabled us to determine the conditions favourable for organising listening-based activities during the period of preparation for the OGE in Russian and to identify the avenues of teaching listening at this stage. The work describes the methods and techniques for teaching different types of listening such as global, detailed, and critical (according to T. A. Ladyzhenskaya). They are used in preparation for completing the test section of the OGE in Russian and writing a summary.
